10 Dec INTRODUCING DECEMBER BUDDY OF THE MONTH: DELIA CHEN
Volunteers give back with the hope that they will help others, but Delia Chen’s experience with her Pediatric and Senior Buddies have helped her too. Delia shared that her senior buddy, Carol, gives great advice and often reminds her to take care of herself too! Delia is constantly inspired by Carol’s resilience and optimism as she navigates this pandemic.
Delia Chen is a senior at the University of Pennsylvania studying Biology. She began volunteering with StudentsCare during her freshman year, looking forward to forming lasting bonds with children, seniors, and their families. Before the pandemic, Delia volunteered as a StudentsCare Buddy at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Now she meets with her Senior Buddy virtually. Delia has seen firsthand that simply asking questions such as “How are you?” and “How can I help?” makes a difference in making others feel supported. Delia and Carol enjoy talking about their shared love of the arts and Philadelphia– having both attended school in the City of Brotherly Love, albeit many decades apart.
Delia’s commitment to her pediatric buddies has not waivered, even though she has not been able to visit the children’s hospital since early March. Delia has recorded craft activities and storytime videos for her pediatric buddies to access during these isolating times in the hospital without visitors. Delia says these new avenues for engagement are “an example of StudentsCare’s dedication to providing care to isolated seniors and hospitalized children.”
Being a StudentsCare Buddy has taught Delia the value of compassion. She feels that she’s “learned what resilience looks like from witnessing the incredible strength of both pediatric patients and seniors.”
