04 Sep INTRODUCING SEPTEMBER BUDDY OF THE MONTH: MANDY CHUANG
College students have found creative ways to help others during a time of need; Mandy Chuang is familiar with the many ways of giving back to the community. Serving as a Hospital Buddy for pediatric patients and a Senior Buddy for isolated seniors, she has found a way to give back to a wide range of people. She hopes to become a nurse after she completes her degree from the University of Pennsylvania in both nursing and nutrition science. One of Mandy’s favorite memories from her time at StudentsCare was when she was able to make a connection with a teenage patient that had been shy previously with other volunteers. The two of them played a game of Uno for two hours and laughed so hard that they cried! It’s moments like these that Mandy cherishes most as a Buddy!
StudentsCare has left a lasting impression on Mandy and her future career by teaching the importance of how far a little compassion can go. She says that she hopes her buddies feel even a fraction of the happiness that spending time together gives her. One aspect that Mandy finds special about StudentsCare is the ability to not only serve children but seniors as well now. She describes StudentsCare volunteers as “genuinely eager to dedicate their time and attention to their buddies” bringing both smiles to their faces and happiness to their days!
Mandy says that she has been supported both by the UPenn chapter and StudentsCare Nationals during her transition from an incoming freshman, to a hospital buddy, and now as a senior buddy and a current chapter leader for the University of Pennsylvania chapter! We want to say thank you again Mandy for all of your hard work and dedication to our cause of supporting isolated seniors and children! We cannot wait to see all that you accomplish in the nursing profession and how you continue to care for others!
