16 May May 2022: Maria Santos
Maria Santos, senior at Florida International University, has been volunteering with StudentsCare for just 6 months now. She supports the chapter through her role as attendance tracker, ensuring all volunteers show up for their visits at their scheduled times, and that visits and hours are accurately recorded. Initially, Maria joined StudentsCare because she is “passionate about working with the elderly community.”
A native of the Dominican Republic, Maria moved to the United States just a few years ago. For the last 5 years, she’s worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant which furthered her desire to volunteer with senior citizens. Maria says her favorite memory with StudentsCare is the day she was paired with her senior buddy, and that on that day “the happiness in [her buddy’s] face was priceless.” She says StudentsCare has really taught her the value in volunteering. After group events, Maria notices how grateful and thankful most of the seniors are towards the volunteers. Some tell her that the student visits make their weeks better. Maria says, “Listening to the seniors’ feedback made me realize what big of an impact we are making in their lives.”
Maria has her hands full as she’s managing a double major in Biological Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in Chemistry. She hopes to become a physician in the future and “apply everything StudentsCare has taught her.”
Thank you, Maria, for all you’ve done for your StudentsCare chapter and your buddy. We are so grateful to have you on the team!
