My name is Breelyn and my StudentsCare journey began at the same time as the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2019, I was a freshman in college thinking I wanted to become a pediatrician. So I decided to participate in StudentsCare’s Hospital Buddy Program at our local children’s hospital. It was a natural fit, a no-brainer really, as an opportunity to volunteer in a pediatric hospital and gain practical experience in my future career.

Unfortunately, I was only able to volunteer for 3 weeks before COVID arrived. Luckily, StudentsCare had a plan to keep us involved and making a difference – within a month of lock-down, they launched their virtual Senior Buddy Program.

I was one of the first volunteers to be paired with a senior buddy. Her name was Lori and she was a 75-year-old widow residing at an assisted living facility in the suburbs of Philadelphia. I received her phone number and a script provided by StudentsCare for the first call. I was nervous but when Lori picked up the phone, I was instantly at ease.

She was incredibly easy to talk to. When I first connected with Lori, she had recently lost her husband to COVID-19. She was feeling isolated, lonely, and exhausted. I was happy to provide a shoulder to lean on and be a distraction and a listening ear.

Two and a half years later, I still call Lori every Monday evening. We’ve talked about anything and everything and I’m grateful for the joy her friendship and sense of humor bring to my life. Our biggest laugh to date was the time the same three Christmas songs played on loop on the loudspeaker at her facility for 5 days straight!

These kinds of connections are extraordinary. Giving to StudentsCare ensures more meaningful connections, like mine and Lori’s, can be made. Older adults get a younger, caring friend – someone to listen to them and take in their stories. And students like me get the gift of perspective and wisdom from those who have led long and compelling lives.

The Senior Buddy program has given me an opportunity I never would’ve expected but will forever be grateful for. Thank you to StudentsCare for doing all that you can to give college students and seniors this amazing experience.

With gratitude,

Breelyn Stelle, Lori’s StudentsCare Buddy
